Measurement of Bubble Diameters in Gas-sparged Agitated Vessels by Small Electrode Probe

A new method using two small wire electrodes was developed for measuring bubble diameters in gas-sparged agitated systems including turbid ones such as microbial culture systems. Average Sauter diameters and distribution of bubble size measured by this new method were in so good agreement with those measured by a photographic method that the propriety of this method was verified. Bubble diameters measured in two agitated vessels, 0.24 and 0.344 m in diameter, were correlated fairly well by the following equation being similar to that reported by Calderbank. d_<vs>=5.08[σ_L^<0.6>/P_g/V_L)^<0.4>ρ_L^<0.2>]ε_G^<0.5>+0.0017 The influence of microbial cells on bubble diameters and gas hold-up in the gas-sparged agitated vessels was found to be negligible so far as our experimental systems using yeast cell suspensions were concerned.
