Effect of Pressure on Biomass Productino from n-Butane

The feasibility of pressurized culture was explored for the production biomass from n-butane by Pseudomonas butanovora sp. nov., a strain capable of utilizing gaseous alkanes for growth. The inhibitory effect of oxygen on growth observed in pressurized cultures at 3 atm (abs.) and over was found to be avoidable by increasing the pressure stepwise in the course of cultivation so as to keep the level of dissolved oxygen below 10 ppm. The productivity of biomass and the efficiency of utilization of n-butane were increased in proportion to the 0.4th power of pressure under the supply of n-butane-air mixture (6 : 94) at a constant mass flow rate corresponding to 0.5 vvm in the standard state, suggesting that pressurized culture is one of the most promising methods of making the production of biomass from gaseous alkanes feasible.
