Effects of Pressure and Dissolved Oxygen Concentration on Growth of Pseudomonas aeruginosa : Studies on Fermentation under Increased Pressure (II)

The cellular growth and activities of a strain of Pseudomonas aeruginosa were examined at pressures of 1-6 atm and dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations of 7.5-90 ppm. Pressure itself dia not affect cellular growth, but cellular yield decreased with increasing DO concentration. The decrease was marked at DO levels above that corresponding to air at 5 atm or pure oxygen at normal pressure. On the other hand, the activity of Pseudomonas cells for consumption of organic substrates was not affected by DO concentration, and very little difference was observed in the final COD values between cultivations at lower and higher DO levels.
