Distributions of circulation times in paper pulp suspensions of various concentrations (0-15 g/l) were investigated in a dual impeller system. One circulation time is defined as the time required for a fluid element pumped out from the zone of high shear surrounding an impeller to circulate to the same zone again without passage through the zone around the other impeller. The results obtained in both upper and lower circulation regions approximately fitted the distribution curves of logarithmic normal probability. In the turbulent regime, the distribution curves in the two circulation regions were identical. The exchange flow rate of fluid between the upper and lower circulation regions was independent of the concentration of paper pulp when the fluid was aerated and agitated under a constant power consumption P〓, and was proportional to P〓. However, the ratio of the exchange flow rate to circulation flow rate in each region was independent of the power consumption, the concentration of paper pulp, and the presence or absence of sparged air in the turbulent regime.
