The effects of phytohormones and light on alkaloid production were investigated using multiple shoot cultures of Catharanthus roseus. A high and balanced level of vindoline and catharanthine, 765 and 552 μg, respectively, useful materials for chemical or enzymatic synthesis of antineoplastic bisndole alkaoids, was obtained per gram of fresh shoots grown on a hormone-free medium under irradiation with intensive light, 20 W/m^2.
