Stereopecific and Electrophoretic Natures of Bacterial 2,3-Butanediol Dehydrogenases

Stereospecificity and disc electrophoresis patterns of 2,3-butanediol dehydrogenases from various bacterial strains were studies. The results obtained were; 1) many strains had more than one 2,3-butanediol dehydrogenase, as judged by disc electrophoresis. The relative mobilities of the enzymes showed a wide range. 2) each enzyme had its own characteristic stereospecificity. Various types of butanediol dehydrohgenases differing in substrate specificity were distributed in the bacteria examined. 3) some similarities of electrophoretic natures of the enzymes(number of bands, relative mobility and specificity of each band)could be found among members of the same family and this was found particularly for Enterobacteriaceae, Micrococcaceae and Bacillaceae. 4) no significant correlation could be found between the amounts of butanediol accumulated and the levels of butanediol dehydrogenase activity.
