Environmental Effents on Ethanol Tolerance of Zymomonas mobilis : Ethanol Tolerance of Zymomonas mobilis (I)

The ethanol-producing bacterium Zymomonas mobilis was studied with regard to ethanol tolerance. Fermentation tests were carried out in batch cultures with stepwise addition of glucose to complex or synthetic medium. Z. mobilis subsp. mobilis produced 15.1 and 15.0% (v/v) ethanol, respectively, in complex and synthetic media at 30℃, which was the optimum temperature for fermentation. Increased concentrations of ethanol from 15.7 to 16.3% (v/v) were obtained by adding sterile pig liver to the synthetic medium at 30℃. The principal fatty acids in the lipids of Z. mobilis subsp. mobilis were C_<14 : 0> (25.0%) and C_<18 : 1> (63.6%) acids. Z. mobilis subsp. pomaceae produced 11.9 and 8.5% (v/v) ethanol, respectively, in complex and synthetic media at 30℃.
