Takashima is a small island located in the north of Nagasaki prefecture, which is kown as an area in which adult T-cell leukemia (ATL) is endemic. In order to determine the distribution of antibody to ATL-associated antigen (anti-ATLA) in this district, determination of anti-ATLA status of persons who came for free health examination was carried out. They were all between the age of 30 and 87 years. A total of 1007 sera (383 males and 624 females) was tested for the presence of anti-ATLA by gelatin particle agglutination test (PA test) and the positive subjects by PA test were tested by indirect immunofluorescence assay. Results obtained are as follows: 1) Overall prevalence of anti-ATLA was 26.7% (269 of 1007 individuals). 2) Prevalence of anti-ATLA was 21.4% (82 of 383) in males and 30.0% (187 of 624) in females. Prevalence of anti-ATLA was significantly higher in females than in males (P<0.01). 3) In both sexes prevalence of anti-ATLA increased with age, but the increase was much greater in females than in males. 4) For the data of peripheral blood and serum chemistry no significant difference was recognized between anti-ATLA positive group and anti-ATLA-negative group.
