A spectrophotometric method for the micro amount determination of 4-iodothymol (I) and thymol (II) which may co-exist as impurities in sample was studied and the following procedure was found to be very simple and give accurate results. To 5 ml of the sample solution containing about 2 mg of I or/and II in a separate funnel, 2 ml of conc. HCl, 3 ml of water and 10 ml of 10% NaCl solution are added, and the mixture is extracted 3 times with about 7 ml portions of chloroform. The chloroform extracts are combined and made up exactly to 25 ml. The absorbancies at 275.5 mμ and 281.0 mμ are measured against a chloroform blank and the amounts of I and II are calculated according to the equations (1)-(5). Interference from surface active agent could be eliminated by passing the sample solution through a column of anion exchange resin, OH form.
