Four 1,2-diol cyclic phosphates, glycerol 1,2-cyclic phosphate (GCP), 1,2-propanediol cyclic phosphate (PCP), 2,3-butanediol cyclic phosphate (BCP) and ethyleneglycol cyclic phosphate (ECP) were studied on their acid-catalysed alcoholysis reaction with several alcohols. For PCP, acid-catalysed alcoholysis was found to occur selectively at its phosphate bond concerned with the secondary hydroxyl group to give only alkyl 2-hydroxypropyl phosphate. Under similar conditions, the phosphate bonds of GCP at α-and β-positions were alcoholysed nonselectively giving 50% each of both alkyl α-and β-glyceryl phosphate. Primary alcohols were found to alcoholyse cyclic phosphates most actively compared with secondary and tertiary ones. The most effective acid catalyst for this reaction was trifluoroacetic acid or hydrochloric acid among the several catalysts tested.
