Seasonal changes in the biochemical composition of total tissues and of the visceral and muscular parts of the brackishwater clam, Corbicula japonica, were studied with special reference to when the clams can be eaten. For this purpose, the specimens were collected from a clam bed in the estuary of the river running through Maebaru City in Fukuoka Prefecture over a period of l year. The range of seasonal fluctuation throughout the year in the contents of lipid and ash was small, while that of protein and sugar, mainly glycogen, was large. The contents of protein and sugar were highest from June to September and from October to April, respectively. The soft body of the clam was separated into the visceral parts (gonad, digestive gland, stomach and intestine) and muscular parts (mantle, siphon, foot, gills and adductors). The wet weight ratio of viscera to total soft body was a minimum in April and a maximum in the period from June to August. This ratio then slightly decreased until November and steadily increased thereafter. It is assumed from the results of monthly microscopic examinations that spawning of the ripe gamates (sperm and ova) took place during the period from September to October. The results of microscopic observation and biochemical composition analysis lead us to assume that there are two seasons during which this clam from Maebaru City in Northern Kyushu can be eaten from June to August (doyou-shijimi) and from December to February (kanshijimi).
