An overall effectiveness factor incorporating the partition coefficient in terms of the bulk concentration of substrate was proposed in order to quantitatively evaluate the effect of unequal distribution of substrate in and outside the support medium on the overall reaction rates of immobilized enzymes.Analytical expressions were derived for the overall effectiveness factor for irreversible zero- and first-order reaction kinetics concerning three geometries, i.e. slab, rod and sphere. Numerical results for the overall effectiveness factors were computed for both irreversible Michaelis-Menten equation and substrate-inhibition kinetics in the spherical geometry. The significance of the partition coefficient in the choice of a suitable microporous gel-material for enzyme immobilization was noted in terms of enhancement of overall reaction rates.
