An approximate expression of effectiveness factor for immobilized biocatalysts with Michaelis-Menten kinetics was proposed and it was compared with those proposed by Atkinson et al. and by Kobayashi et al. in terms of the magnitude of relative deviation from the corresponding true numerical values when the geometrical shapes were a slab and a sphere. When external film diffusional resistance was negligible and the biocatalyst support was a slab, Atkinson's approximate expression gave the best estimation, while it was worst for a sphere. Kobayashi's approximate expression exhibited the highest accuracy for a spherical particle when the external film diffusional resistance could be ignored. Both approximate expressions could not estimate the "overall effectiveness factor", i.e. the effectiveness factor including influences of both internal pore and external film diffusional resistances, whereas the approximate expression proposed in this article could be applied to both cases. The new approximate expression was slightly worse than Kobayashi's expression for both a slab and a sphere but differences are insignificant. The absolute values of relative errors when overall effectiveness factors were calculated by the new approximate expression were less than 3% if the geometrical shape was a sphere. The significance of the new approximate expression of the overall effectiveness factor is discussed from the view point of development of a convenient design procedure for a bioreactor.
