A Structural Study of[N (CH_3)_4]_2HgCl_4 in Connection with Its Phase Transition

The structures of the normal phase (I) and the monoclinic phase (II) were defer-mined by single crystal diffractometry; at 23'Cin phase I and at 1.5, - 10, -40 and- 70'C in phase II. In phase l HgCl. Jon and two kinds of N(CH.). tons were defer-mined to be in disorder from the significance test. In phase II the positional and ther-mat parameters as well as the occupation probabilities of ions were determined. Rota-tional and translational modes of HgC1. and the translational mode of one kind ofN(CH,)., TMAI, couple with the ordering in this structural phase transition. Thestructure is characterized by two kinds of chains composed of HgCl. and TMAI; oneis along [001] and the other is along [1004.[N(CH.).].HgCl,., crystal structure, phase transition
