A Structural Study of [N (CH_3)_4]_2CdBr_4 in Connection with Its Phase Transition

The crystal structure of [N(CH,).].CdBr. NVQS studied at 21'Cin the room tempera-Lure phase and at - 3, - 8, - 35, - 80 and - 115'C in the low temperature phase bysingle crystal diffractometry. In the room temperature phase, CdBr. ion and twokinds of N(Cl-I,). ions were determined to be in disorder from Fourier synthesis andthe significance test. In the low temperature phase, the occupation probabilities ofions as well as positional and thermal parameters were determined. The structure ischaracterized by two kiuacls of chains composed of CdBr. and N(Cl.).; one is along[001] and the other is along [1003. The deviation A 73 of monoclinic angle p from 90'shows the characteristic temperature dependence as reported in [ N (CH,).1,ZnBr. and[N(Cl,).].CoBr.; A fi increases rapidly just below the transition temperature thendecreases almost linearly as temperature decreases and changes its sign at about- 72'C.[N(Cl,).1,CdBr., crystal structure, phase transition
