Neutron and X-ray diffraction studies were carried out on polycrystallinespecimens of stoichiometric (S-) and non-stoichiometric (N-) YFe.0.. An asym-metric diffraction line was observed above the Neel point (7'.z:235 K) in S-YFe.0. and both above and below T. (7'.7:210 K) in N-YFe.Oq. At above T.,the line profile was quantitatively interpreted as due to two-dimensional criticalscattering, on an assumption that the scattering cross section is a Lorentzian ina h-k plane, independent of l. The correlation length, x, and the susceptibility at(173, 173, /), z, obey an exponential law: tccc(T -T;)" and '7,c>c(T -T;) ', re-spectively, with P=1.5.1.0.05, 7=3.1 f0.l and 7',.=233.0.]O.5 K in S-YFe.0..It was concluded that the spin correlation is two-dimensional in the hexagonalYFe.0., both in the S- and N-compounds, but a crystal deformation induces atlu'ee-dimensional spin ordering in S-YFe.0q.
