The Second Order Magnetoelectric Effect in a High Purity YIG (Yttrium Iron Garnet) Single Crystal

The magnetoelectric effect, which was second order in the electric field, wasmeasured in a YIG single crystal synthesized with traveling floating zone method inthe temperature range between 77 K and 240 K. Contrary to the first order effect, thesignal due to the second order effect was independent of the electric field during cool-ing of the specimen from room temperature. However, the temperature dependencewas very similar: both effect decreased sharply around 125 K, although a small part ofthe second order effect remained at higher temperature. The signal at 77 K was ana-lysed on the mechanism of the electric field dependence of the magnetic anisotropy. Itis suggested that the electric field induced magnetic anisotropy, which is second orderin the magnetization direction, plays an important role, as well as the change of the or-dinary K. term in the cubic phase.magnetoelectric effect, YIG, magnetic anisotropy
