Neutron and X-Ray Small Angle Scattering Studies of Rapidly Quenched La-Fe Alloys

Small angle scattering of' netttrouas and x-rays were measured in a range of 0.008<q[:(4'm/A)sin&]< 0.2 A ' for rapidly quenched La-Fe alloys. As-quenched allays are su-perpararnagnetic at room temperature and ferronaagnetic below about 270 K. Both neutron andx-ray scattering show decreases of the intensity proportional to q ' for the as-qtrenched specirnen.Little effect was observed on decreasing the tetnperature to 10 K or with the application of anexternal xaaagnetic field up to 5 k0e. These facts indicate that the scattering is not of rnagneticorigin. After an annealing at 35O'C for 30 min., the alloys change into antiferromagnets, Afterheat treatment, the scattering intensity decreased considerably and its q-dependence changed toq '. These results are disctrssed based on a two-stage solidification process of the alloy, estitnatedfroun magnetic measurements, and the "density v?triation between random boundaries" rnodelcaused by nonnaagnetic Fe atorns dissolved at the periphery of La grains.
