Magnetic and Transport Properties of LaCo_<1-x>Ni_xO_3-Comparison with La_<1-x>Sr_xCoO_3

We hax'e investigated rnagnetization, netrtron scattering, resistivity, tlaernaoelectric poxver artdHall effect in LaCoa ,rNi.0a (r = 0.05 and 0.1) single crystals. At low teunperattrres, they slaoxvspin-glass behavior with a stro?ag f'errona;tgnetic correlation. Arourad 500 K, spin state trarasition frotaa the interraaediarte sjcin state (,S' : l) to the high sjoira state (.5 = 2) accoraapanied byan instulator-to-uaaetal transition is o].cserved as in trndoped L2lC0O3. These uaaagnetic proper-ties of L8.C0l .Ni..Oa are verv sirnilar to those rreviouslv rer>orted f'or Lau .Sr,t.Co0a. Thelow-tetaaperattmre transport properties of' botla LaCoj .Ni.O3 and La) .Sr'.Co03 exhibit thecharacteristics of an insulator near the instrlator-to-taaetal transition. Tire sign of the c?trrier isverified to be positive in both systems from the thernaoelectric power naeastureznent. However,the sign of the Hall coefficient of Labor ..Ni,.0a is taegartive. Tlaese transport properties aredisctussed in ternas of $1112111 polaron hoppitag unechanaisuaa.
