A Low Temperature Phase Transition in Yttrium Iron Garnet (YIG)

• First order magnetoelectric effect was observed at 77 K in an yttrium iron garnet(YIG) single crystal, when it was cooled down in both electric and magnetic fieldssimultaneously. The sign of observed signal was inverted when the electric field during cooling was reversed. The signal disappeared continuously around 130 K. Thisresult indicates that YIG has a phase transition at the temperature below which thestructure lacks the centre of inversion.
