Melt-spun amorphous Fe. ,Nd. alloys (0.113,v30.60) were investigated by themagnetization measurement up to 143 kOe and the M6ssbauer spectroscopy. Thecoercive field at 4.2 K increases abruptly at arouncl ,X'=0.30 with increasing x, amounting to 53 k0e at x=O.4O. The hyperfine field of "Fe at 77 K is independent of x andabout 300 k0e on an average, suggesting that the magnetic moment of Fe is about2,Oq./atom throughout this system. On this assumption and the measuredmagnetization at 4.2 K, it is estimated that the average Nd moment is about 3.2p./ atom at the low x limit. This value corresponds to the free ion value of Nd". TheNd moment decreases with increasing x to one half, 1.6 p./ atom. A ferromagneticcluster model with large random anisotropy is proposed for the high coercivity alloysof this system. Magnetizatiota curves at 4.2 K are well explaitted by the model, by anadjustment of the parameters for the anisotropy energy of The cluster and the inter-cluster coupling. The concentration dependence of the coercive field is discussedbriefly.
