Magnetic Properties of the Two Dimensional Antiferromagnets RFe_2O_4 (R=Y, Er) at High Pressure

Pressure dependence of magnetic susceptibilities of YFe.0. and ErFez03 laas beenmeasured up to 6 kbar above about 100 K. Two magnetic plaase transitions are ob-served in the temjverature region of 200-250 K at ambient pressure for both corn-pounds. The transitions of YFe.O. are depressed with increasing pressure. Especiallythe lower transition rapidly decreases in temperatu?"e and then disappears at 6 kbar.The tratasitions of .ErFe.O. SIIOW different pressure dependence, that is, the laighertransition temperatx?re increases and the lower one decreases with increasing pressure.The depression of t1?e transition temperatures is explained as tlae volume effect on thefirst order phase transition, while the pressure dependence of the higher transitioxa inErFe.O. is interpretecl as the 10/ 3 law fox' the volume depemadence of superexchange in-teractioua.
