Phase transition of /7.-AgZn alloy was studied by means of neutron inelastic anddiffuse scattering techniques. Acoustic phonon dispersion relation along the maincrystal axes of the alloy was obtained. No EC('l'lLA phonon anomalies related to the(-phase was observed, although previous sound experiment followed by elastic conslant analysis predicts that possibility. The observed anomalies in phonon energy ofboth [<'(O]TA. and [(<' -2l'lTA modes associated with the diffuse scattering peaks indicate that a strong lattice instability is involved in the phonon modes. It is pointedout that the lattice instability plays important roles in the structure transition from p.phase to (-phase or to the martensitic phase in the AgZn alloy.[Iattice instability,AgZn, precursor phenomena, martensilic phase, neutron scat- ]l tering, phonon dispersion, force constant analysisl
