To elucidate the dynanaical mechanism of the 73. to ; transition the elasticconstants of metastable 733 phase of Ag-Zn allays containing 46.5 and 48.b>at. '7;Zn are utaeasured in the range between room temper'ature and the' p3 to ; transitiontemperature using an ultrasonic pulse-echo overlaj>ping rnethod. The elastic constants Ct[110]=(Ctn-l-Czz-l-2C,sx)/2 and C44 decrease linearlvwith increasing temperature up to 340 K and then fall 111018 rapidly on f'urtherheating. On the other hand, C.. decreases linearly on heating up to 340 [K andthen increases at hisher texaareratures. Furthertnore, CL[ll1]=(Cll-l-2C12-l-4C44)/3 which is mainly related to the 73. to ; t?'ansition uaaechanisun decreasesrapidly above 340 K. These elastic cons(ants show a characteristic tezttperaturehysteresis with heating and cooling. Based on tlm:e obtained results, we discussthe transition n'uechanism and stability of the 73. phase!
