Elastic and Inelastic Neutron Scattering Studies on the Martensitic Phase Transformation in Cu-39at.%Zn Alloy

Neutron scattering studies have been jcerforrned to eltrcidate the naartensitic transforruaationnaechanism in a quenched Cu.3jZn3g allay, The TA)[1104 phonon branch (e/[1104) showed slightsoftening over the entire q-region in the parent pl'xase as the transfornaation tenaperature wasapproached on cooling. No particu1?rr dip was observed even .jvxst above the trans['ormationternperature, while the intensities of the quasi-elastic diffuse scattering developed near q1/6[11O] and l/3[llO] positions in the parent phase. No anornaly XV21S found in severarl otherphonon branclaes. The structttre of' the f3'.' raaartensite phase xvas investigated, and a naixed phaseof an orthorhornbic structure and a naonoclinic structure is j.croposed, which are botl'n differentfrom the previotrsly reported structttres. An annealing effect was observed to confirrn the role ofinclusions in tl'xe parent phase.
