Two-Dimensional XY Behaviours in an Antiferromagnetic Mn (HCOO)_2・2H_2O Inducek by the Magnetic Field

Two-dimensional (2d) XY behaviours have been revealed in a quasi-2d iso-tropic antiferromagnet Mn(HCOO). ?2H.0 (T.=3.69 K) in the external magneticfield of appropriate strength. The anomalous increase of the observed N<Set tem-perature T.(#) in the field has been explained to be attributed to a crossover ofspin symmetry from the l-Ieisenberg type to the XY type induced by the field.The absolute values of magnetic heat capacity of this 2d XY system induced bythe field of II=2O k0e have been compared with the theoretical values expectedfor the 2d plane rotator model. A quantitative agreement has been found betweenthem in the temperature region higher than T.(#). Discussion has been given ofthe heat capacity peak near the critical region.
