Birefringence for light travelliutg along the c axis was observec;l above the Curie termperature T. in the strained regions characteristic of the KH,PG.. crystal. The birefringence and the area of the birefringent regions incre;tse as the temperature approachesT.. In the strained regions, the crystal is optically biaxial and negative, and the opticalindicatrix has the same orientation as that in the ferroelectric j>hase. It is found thatthe birefringence is induced by the strain of x. type around th<r lattice imperfectionsthrough a photoelastic effect.KDP, lattice imperfection, growth sector, birefringence, photoelastic effect
