Steady Flow Observed below the Threshold of Benard Convection

Fluid velocity of Benard convection near the threshold has been measuredwith high accuracy by a laser velocimeter. The steady flow of the fluid is found toappear even in the conduction region below the threshold and to grow smoothlyto convection through the critical point. It has the same space structure as thatin the convection region and its critical behavior is independent oli the aspectratio of the Benard cell.
