Angular correlation of photon pairs generatecl by the positron annihilationhas been measured in ultrafine particles (a few hundred angstrom in diameter)of simple metals (Zn, Cd, AN, Ge, and Pb) to characterize the surface states oftheir conduction electrons. The samples were prepared by the gas evaporationmethod and kept in vacuum through the experiment. The experimental resultsare summarized as follows: (I) The full width at half maxirnum of the angularcorrelation curve for the ultrafine particles decrea.ses to 88, 96, 81, 87, and 86%111 comparison with that for tlae corresponding bulk metals for Zn, Cd, Al, Go,and Pb, respectively. (2) The contribution of the conduction electrons to theangular correlation curves has a long and wide tail without the sharp cutoff atFermi momentum, 0(, in the particles.
