Structural Transformation in C-15 Compounds Zr_<1-x>M_xV_2 (M=Y, Nb, La, Hf and Ta)

Significant anomalies in the resistivity are observed around 110 K in the systems Zr_<1-x>Y_xV_2, Zr_<1-x>La_xV_2 and Zr_<1-x>Hf_xV_2. In the systems Zr_<1-x>Nb_xV_2 and Zr_<1-x>Ta_xV_2, on the other hand, weak anomalies in the resistivity are seen only at low x. X-ray diffraction patterns at 77 K confirm that these anomalies are caused by a structural transformation. The structural transformation temperature and the superconducting transition temperature depend considerably on the electron-per-atom ratio, which suggests the possibility that electronic instabilities cause the structural transformation.
