To study the functional or organic vascular changes in the M-strain stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rat (M-SHRSP), fundus photographs were taken and fluorescein angiographic studies were made. In spite of the marked functional changes of the retinal vessels in the fundus, few histological changes were observed in the M-SHRSP. Then, the hypertensive changes of the fundus of M-SHRSP were graded and scored. Scoring of the ophthalmoscopic changes in hypertension may be useful for evaluating the efficacy of antihypertensive drugs.
