High-performance liquid chromatographic studies on mercapt-nonmer-capt conversion of human serum albumin in the renal transplants

Human serum albumin(HSA)is the mixture of human mercaptalbumin(HMA)and nonmercaptalbumin(HNA). High-performance liquid chromatographic(HPLC)analysis of sera on Asahipak GS-520 column at neutral pH resolved HSA into HMA and HNA. Fractions of HMA (fHMA)in patients with chronic renal failure(no hemodialysis)were significantly lower than those of healthy male adults. Values of(1-fHMA)were correlated with serum creatinine concentrations. Values of fHMA in the renal transplants were significantly higher than those in patients with chronic renal failure. In the renal transplants, the graft function, classified by serum creatinine concentration, was correlated with fHMA values, indicating fHMA as an useful index of the graft function.
