On bromination with acetyl bromide and acetic anhydride at 130°C, <I>vibo</I>-quercitol (<B>1</B>) gave tetraacetyl 1-bromo-1-deoxy-<I>scyllo</I>-quercitol (<B>2</B>) in 23% yield. Treatment of <B>2</B> with sodium azide in an appropriate solvent afforded three azido compounds, from which, by hydrogenation, corresponding three deoxyinosamines were obtained: 1-deoxy-<I>scyllo</I>-2, 5-deoxy-<I>chiro</I>-1 and 1-deoxy-<I>myo</I>-2-inosamine. The latter two are new compounds and their structures were established by their proton magnetic resonance (PMR) spectra and the reaction sequences.
