Aminocyclitol antibiotic kanamycin B has been modified as regards the aminocyclitol moiety by removing a hydroxyl group on C-5. 5-Deoxykanamycin B thus obtained was tested against several microorganisms. The structure of 5-deoxykanamycin B was established by mass and <SUP>13</SUP>C NMR spectrometry. 5,6,3′,4′-Tetradeoxyneamine was prepared as a reference compound for <SUP>13</SUP>C NMR spectrometry.
