In 4 normal males and in 4 normal females arginine infusion (0.5g/kg/30min) was performed twice at 2 hours intervals and plasma levels of growth hormone were estimated by radioimmunoassay at 30min intervals. The same study was made on all of 8 individuals again after 1 week. The increase of growth hormone level was quite variable and was not reproducible in most of the cases. Maximum levels were scattered between a 30 to 120 min after the start of both infusions. In some cases response was observed only after the first infusion and in others it was observed only after the second infusion. The response after 1 week was also quite variable and was not reproducible. The increase of insulin level was maximum at 30min after the start of both infusions in all cases and peak value after the second infusion was lower than that after the first infusion. These responses were fairly reproducible after 1 week. Time of peak of insulin response was at the end of infusion while time of peak of growth hormone response was most frequently observed 30 min after the end of infusion. These results suggest that the insulin response to arginine is a direct effect while the growth hormone response to arginine is an indirect effect. Growth hormone response to arginine was observed even under continuous glucose load and no relationship was observed between the GH response and the change of blood glucose. These results indicate that GH response to arginine is not due to the reduction of glucose. No definite relation was observed between GH response and the reduction of NEFA. This result indicates that the GH response to arginine is not mediated through the change of NEFA. GH response to arginine seems to be mediated by some unknown substance.
