Coptis rhizomes and cultured Coptis japonica cells were compared by the dissolution test. Since the drug is often used in stomachics, two kinds of artificial gastric-juices were used as the extraction fluid in the test. The dissolution process of berberine from both of the drug powders were similar. In the acidic fluid, the dissolution of berberine was above 90%, 10 min after the start of extraction and in the neutral fluid they were 50% in 10 min and remained around 80% from 30 min to 2 h. Under the test conditions used, the Coptis cells were assessed to be equivalent to Coptis rhizome. Therefore, Coptis callus may be used as a stomachic ingredient.
