The finger type, which is the relative projection of the tip of the index and ring fingers, was studied in Japanese, 269 males and 263 females, 4 to 89 years of age. The length of metacarpals and phalanges was also measured on the radiograms of the same subjects. The incidence of the type II>IV was significantly more frequent in females than in males, on the left side than on the right. The difference of projection of two fingers in mm. was termed as "the finger-type score" for quantitative analysis. Changes with age in the mean values of this score represented a remarkable increase prior to puberty followed by gradual increase until senility. The statistical analyses with correlation matrix and T-test revealed that the length of distal phalanx of the ring finger was most responsible for the genesis of individual variation in this item.
