The normal range of variation in the short little finger relative to the ring finger was investigated. The subjects consisted of healthy Japanese medical students, 302 males and 112 females, 19 to 23 years of age. The short little finger detected as the positive Blincoe's sign was significantly more frequent in females than in males, and this tendency was also seen in Du Bois's sign. The incidence of the positive Du Bois's sign was statistically highly related with that of the positive Blincoe's sign, but the incidence of these signs was entirely independent from that of the finger-type.
