Measurements on the width of the palmaris longus tendon were made on the apparently healthy Japanese, 263 males and 259 females, 4 to 89 years of age, with the fingers II, III and IV kept fully extended and the wrist flexed slightly. The category of "absent" was defined when the tendon was non-palpable; and that of "vestigial" when it was barely palpable but non-measurable. The incidence of this tendon was calculated in each age groups, but mean values of the tendon width were obtained on the data exclusive of the absent and vestigial cases. The mean values were significantly larger in males than in females, and no significant side differences were found in both sexes. The tendon width increased rapidly until puberty to reach the adult values and then decreased gradually toward the senile period. It was correlated significantly to stature, and represented the significant negative correlation to age in adults.
