Principles of deciding ups and downs in moire interferometry were described. The grating projection technique was used to obtain the displacement component away from the arbitrary standard surface of an object and its direction was acquired simultaneously. The hill or valley of the moire pattern was determined by the deformations of the projected grating. This procedure was demonstrated as a practical application on the costal surface of the scapula.
