The degree of maximal passive extension at the M-P and I-P joints of the thumb was examined on Japanese population, 4 to 89 years of age, 269 males and 262 females. The mean values of extension at the M-P joint were much larger on the left than on the right thumb. They were significantly larger in females than in males. However, the side differences were more prominent than sex differences. This remarkable asymmetry was characteristic of extension at the M-P joint. Moreover, the mean values were different among age groups, and the high values in young childhood decreased at the onset of puberty and represented rather consistent pattern during adulthood, followed by gradual decrease toward the senile period. On the other hand, the mean values of extension at the I-P joint showed quite a contrasting tendency to those at the M-P joint. That is, the variations in terms of asymmetry, sex differences and changes with age were not significant. No correlation was found between the mean values of extension at the M-P and I-P joints of the thumb. This fact indicates that the background factors for the extension at these two joints were independent of each other.
