Physiological Clinodactyly : Incurving of Distal Phalanx of Fingers on the Radio-ulnar Plane

The normal variation in clinodactyly, which is designated for the radio-ulnar curvature at the distal interphalangeal joint of fingers, was investigated on 513 healthy Japanese, 4 to 89 years of age. The angle of the curvature was measured on the skin (dermatographic measurements) as well as on the radiogram of the same individuals. The mean values of clinodactyly in adults were larger on the little finger than on the index finger for both hands and sexes. Sex differences, in general, were more marked than asymmetry, the values being larger in females than in males. The radiographic value had significant correlation to dermatographic angle, the latter was more reliable due to the possibility of three-dimensional correction for the evaluation of incurving angle. The values of clinodactyly did not correlate significantly to the quintal index and brachymesophalangeal index. The influence of age was not remarkable in adults.
