The number of phalangeal hairs was counted on the dorsum of the middle segment of the ring finger and on that of the proximal segment of the thumb, in a random population of healthy Japanese subjects, 263 males and 252 females, 4 to 89 years of age. Sex differences on the above two items were highly significant especially in adults on each side, but the side difference was statistically not significant in all age groups for both sexes. The amount of hairs increased rapidly during the growth period to reach the peak values at the 4th decade, followed by the rapid decrease toward the senile period in both sexes. The number of proximal phalangeal hairs on the thumb was distinctly larger than that of the middle phalangeal hairs on the ring finger, especially in male adults. The correlation between the quantity of phalangeal hairs of digit I and IV was highly significant, but they were not correlated significantly to 12 other items, excepting to the stature only in females.
