The mode of hand-clasping was classified into two types in accordance with the position of the right thumb whether it is superior (S-type) or inferior (I-type) to the left thumb. The incidence of these types was examined by inspection in a random population of healthy Japanese subjects, 262 males and 260 females, 4 to 89 years of age. The S-type was significantly more frequent than I-type through all ages in both sexes. This tendency was more marked in adults than in youngsters. The incidence among age groups was not significantly different in both sexes. No significant sex differences were found in all age groups.
