Radiological Study on Variation in the Shape of Metacarpal Head and its Relations to the Range of Movement at M-P Joint of the Thumb

The shape of the head of the 1st metacarpal was investigated on the radiograms in relation to the range of movement at the metacarpophalangeal joint of the thumb in 198 males and 185 females, 15 to 89 years of age. The index values representing the ratio of height and width of the articular surface were significantly larger in females than in males and on the left than on the right thumb and showed positive correlation to the amount of maximal flexion at the M-P joint, but were not correlated to that of maximal extension. As a non-metrical approach, the shape of the joint head was classified into 4 types according to the presence and site of a dimple on the joint surface. The range of movement at the M-P joint with the nondimply head was the least in extent among these types. The mean values of maximal flexion was larger in palmidimply type, but those of maximal extension were not necessarily larger in dorsidimply type. It was concluded that the amount of maximal extension at this joint was not influenced by the shape of the joint head, but by any other morphological background.
