Variation in Flexion and Total Range of Movement at the M-P Joint of the Thumb in Japanese

The degree of maximal passive flexion at the M-P joint of the thumb was measured by a hinge and protractor on subjects of the same Japanese random population as in our previous paper on the study of extension. According to quintic polynomial regression curves in correlation to age in years, the high mean values of flexion seen in childhood decreased rapidly prior to the 4th decade, and then began to increase to reach the final level. Sex differences were more pronounced than asymmetry, in constrast with the relation in case of extension. The total range of joint movement, which was the amount of flexion added by that of extension, was also analyzed. Remarkable asymmetry seen in young children was reduced toward adulthood, and sex differences took the place of asymmetry on and after the sexually matured period.
