The relative skeletal length of the thumb to the middle finger in terms of the pollical index was investigated on radiograms of 248 male and 229 female Japanese, 4 to 89 years of age. The mean values of this index were significantly larger in males than in females, but differences between the right and left hands were negligible. The index values did not represent any changes with age after 20 years, while those before puberty were fluctuant in both sexes. On account of factors involved in the index values, the parameter of the thumb was more variable and responsible than the middle finger.
