The normal range of variation in the metacarpal index, as an average of the length/width indices on the metacarpals II, III, IV and V, was investigated on the radiograms of healthy Japanese subjects, 251 males and 240 females, 4 to 89 years of age. The mean values increased rapidly until the third decade to reach the constant adult values. In adults, the values of the index varied from 5.9 to 8.6 in males, from 6.1 to 8.7 in females. The mean values were significantly larger in female adults than in male adults on both sides. The side differences were significant, the values being larger on the left than on the right in male adults. The values on the length/width index of each metacarpal bone, in general, were highest in the metacarpal IV and lowest in the metacarpal V. The age changes of the index values, especially in childhood connecting with the bone growth, were exceptional in the male metacarpal II. The significant correlation of the adult metacarpal index to other items, such as age, cephalic and Rohrer's indices was not significant, excepting the positive correlation to the stature in females.
