Surgical orthodontic treatment and changes in masticatory muscle activity during clenching in a case with skeletal Class III and mandibular asymmetry

• The patient was a female with Angle Class III malocclusion, asymmetry of the mandible, and two missing lower left molars. The chief complaint was difficulty in clenching at the centric occlusion position. The masticatory muscle activity during maximum clenching was approximately-2 SD smaller than the normative values due to poor interdigitation of the teeth. Surgical orthodontic treatment was performed, followed by prosthodontic treatment of the left lower molars. The patient showed excellent improvement in occlusion and the deviated mandible was corrected after active treatment. The occlusion was stable without relapse after a retention period of two years. The masticatory muscle activity during maximum clenching increased to a value approximately 1 SD higher than the normative one.
