Class III open-bite with severe long face : A case report of surgical orthodontic treatment

An adult female who showed severe skeletal Class III open-bite malocclusion and long lower face height due to mandibular excess was treated, putting high priority on both esthetic improvement and long term occlusal stability. Following pre-surgical orthodontic treatment with maxillary lateral expansion, Le Fort l osteotomy, sagittal split ramus osteotomy (SSRO) and genioplasty were performed. During post-surgical orthodontic treatment, heavy labial wire was used to maintain the width of upper dental arch. After treatment, acceptable good facial esthetics and occlusion were obtained. Furthermore, smoothness of the jaw closing movements improved significantly after treatment. The improvements in the facial profile and the dental arches remained stable for two years.
